Are Fake Boobs Disappearing from Porn ?

Even though it might not be exactly your thing, you've definitely already seen pornstars with fake boobs. Some adore it, some find it horrible, most of us don't really care, as long as it's well made. Getting boob implants is almost a standard procedure for pornstars. Once achieved a certain level of fame, it was until now almost expected that a pornstar would get breast enlargements. Many examples illustrate this point: Julie Skyhigh, Asa Akira, Aletta Ocean, Black Angelicka, Alanah Rae, Brooke Banner, Bridgette B, Courtney Cumms and many others went under the scalpel once their careers had gained a certain momentum.

Yet is would seem like getting a boob job is getting less and less popular among pornstars. This might be an effect of the increasing porosity between professional, semi-amateur and amateur porn: more and more amateurs, not necessarily having the dream of pursuing a long-term porn career with the ensuing obligatory boob job are entering the porn market. At the same time, the growing popularity of amateur porn among the public and the booming of several amateurish productions such as FakeTaxi (UK), French Bukkake (France) or MyDirtyHobby (initially German, now Europe) where a majority of the starred girls look more natural, is not signalling to the professional pornstars that it's good times for fake boobs.

In 2009, the percentage of pornstars in the world having had a boobjob was a little under a third, at 31,3%. 2 years after, in 2011, this figure had already fallen to 28,5% Today, in 2017, the percentage only amounts to 21,1%. So in a little less of a decade, the proportion of pornstars worldwide having fake boobs went from roughly a third to approximately a fifth. As of 2017, around 80% of the pornstars have natural tits. This is particularly surprising considering that the share of pornstars having fake boobs is correlated to their age, and as this figure counts both active and retired actresses, one wouldn't be crazy to expect the figures to rise over time.

Some countries have seen a dramatic fall in their share of faked-boobs actresses: Germany went from over 47% in 2011 to 34% today, over the same period Spain's percentage went from 50% to 27%, Ukraine's from 16% to 5%, Colombia's from 47% to 21% and the USA's from 32% to 22%. In comparison, only a few of the major porn-nations had a growing share of pornstars with fake boobs: Romania going from 13% to 23%, the UK going from 33% to 35% and Australia going from 28% to 23%.

The worldwide slow-down can be traced back to the 2 main porn-producing countries: Japan and the USA. The first saw it's proportion of boobs with silicone be divided by 3 over the period 2011-17 and the USA lost 11 point of percentage over the same period.

The percentage of pornstars having fake boobs varies a lot from one country to another and reaches a 1:10 proportion if you look at the extremes: 3,4% in Japon vs 42,6% in Argentina. The main four ethnic-political regions of the world of porn can also be spotted in regards to this statistic: Eastern Europe (in orange) showcasing crushing majorities of natural boobs (only ranging from 5% to 23% fake boobs), with Asia (in pink) following close after (ranging from 3% to 26%). The Anglo-Saxon (in blue) and the Latin (in green) types then shares the upper places in this ranking (ranging from 21% to 43%).

Pornstar Population Around The World

Even though we did already have a thorough geographical representation (cartogram format of the sizes of the different porn star populations around the world, I never gave you the exact figures. So here is the world ranking as of July 2016, counting all porntars within each country (active and retired).

Geographic distributions II : Effects of distance, the Ripple effect vs the Strauss-Lévy effect

What impact does the geography of porn have on the aspiring pornstars? Is a woman more likely to become a pornstar if she grows up near a city where porn is produced? Or on the contrary, does the distance enhance her will to embrace that specific career and sort out only the most motivated? 

What has emerged from the statistics are two distinct models, or patterns, that modelise the attractivity of porn-producing cities on aspiring pornstars.

a) The Ripple effect

The ripple effect works like a drop of water in a lake. At the contact of the drop, the strong impact is going to create tiny waves that slowly die out in the water. The closer to the place of the impact, the stronger the wave, the further from the impact, the weaker the wave. Applied to porn statistics, this gives us a structure where the centre is going to have a very high pornstar density, the neighbouring areas are going to have a slightly less strong pornstar density and the pornstar density is going to decline progressively as the centre gets further away. To put it shortly, pornstar density is strongly negatively correlated with distance.

This phenomenon can be schematised in the following way, the red being the centre and the darkness of colour representing the pornstar density.

This model is dominant in the Americas, it applies to Canada, the USA and Brazil, notably. In the case of the USA, considering Los Angeles as the ultimate centre of porn-production, the model applies almost perfectly. It even resists a correlation test with proven results. Taking the distance between the capitals of the 9 states surrounding California and the pornstar densities of these 9 states, the negative correlation stands out clearly at -0.72, scoring 0.53 on the Pearson test. To put it in other terms, the further the states' capitals were from Los Angeles, the lower was the pornstar density. With the same exercice applied to Miami and 6 neighbouring states, the correlation results were quite close to the LA results: -0.73 (R²) and 0.19 (Pearson).

b) The Lévy-Strauss effect

This model is predominant in Europe and in Japan. It stipulates that the main centre of porn will have a high pornstar density, while its immediate hinterland will display a relatively low pornstar density. The pornstar density then gets higher and higher before reaching a density close or even higher than the one in the centre in the ultra-peripherical regions. In its most extreme form, this model is directly opposed to the Ripple effect, in the sense that distance will be positively correlated with pornstar density and not negatively correlated, like in the Ripple effect.

                                       

I gave the name of French anthropologist Claude Lévy-Strauss to this model, as he the first discovered and codified a similar pattern within the coupling models of exogamous primitive societies. In his model, the very centre (the enlarged family) and the furthest periphery ("foreign" tribes) were the two areas in which nobody was allowed to search for spouses. Partners could only be found in a sufficiently close, but yet not too close, groups of people. The opposite model is true for endogamous societies: they will in priority look for partners in the family (cousins notably) and then in foreign tribes, but not amongst other members of the same tribe. The porn industry works in the exact same way in countries where the Lévy-Strauss effect is prevalent: pornstars are to be found "close-up" in the very centre and "far away" in the furthest peripherical regions, but not in the space in between.  

This pattern, in its initial or its reverse form, has also been noticed in a number of other human behaviours and attitudes, such as racism. It was found indeed in France that racist voters were neither those who were in close-up contact with foreigners (typically big cities) nor those who almost never encountered foreigners (deeply rural areas), but typically the ones in between.

The Lévy-Strauss model is most perfectly represented in Japan. There, the centre of porn is Tokyo, in the Kanto region, displaying a pornstar density of 22.6. The immediate neighbouring regions to Kanto, Kansai and Chubu score respectively 5 and 3.2. The pornstar density then increases correlatively with the distance from Tokyo to reach the extremes of 24.8 for Okinawa (South) and 16.9 for Hokkaido (North). The correlation between the distance to the centre (excluding the centre itself) and the pornstar density amounted to an impressive R²=0.88 with a Pearson coefficient of 0.77.

France is another country that follows the Lévy-Strauss model, with a R²=0.54 (Pearson = 0.29) correlation between distance from the centre (Paris) and pornstar density.

Now, let's get back to our initial question "What variables explain that a woman becomes a pornstar ?". Geographic factors seem to be quite strong indeed, but not always in the ways you would expect. 

• One rather obvious observation that has been confirmed by our porn statistics is that if you're born in a porn production centre, you will be more prone to become a pornstar. This is universally true. Regardless of the country and the region of the world, the places where porn production is prevalent will also display high pornstar ratios: Paris, London, Tokyo, Barcelona, California are all examples of this.  
• In the Americas, it appears clearly that being born closer to a major porn production centre (such as Los Angeles or Miami) will indeed make you more likely to embrace the porn career. 
• In Europe and Japan, on the other hand, the correlation is somehow reversed, excepting the porn-producing centres. In these regions of the world, the further you are from the centre, the higher are your chances that you will become a pornstar. 
• This effect that I have named after Lévy-Strauss is particularly strong in centralised states, such as Japan, the United Kingdom and France, where the purely geographical factor adds up with economic factors to explain the prevalence of pornstars. In these countries indeed, economic development and prosperity are also lower the further you get away from the centre. In federal countries, such as Germany or Spain, this effect is less operational.

Geographic distributions I : Monocentered, bicentered and polycentered countries

The 25 porn-producing countries in the world can be distributed into 3 categories of geographical distribution, as follows :

a) The monocentered countries

Most of the porn-producing countries that are unitary states, centered around a big city (most of the time, but not always, the capital) that concentrates political, economic and cultural power will also witness a concentration of their porn productions in this city. This leads to the emergence of a single centre of porn, characterised by a high pornstar density, higher salaries in the porn industry and, in most cases, an indigenous (Paris, London, Tokyo...) and/or an imported porn industry (Budapest, Prague...). In countries where the local porn industry is nascent or almost inexisting (Slovakia, Romania...) these cities will often be home to amateur productions and be platforms to export aspiring pornstars to cities with a sounder porn industry.

b) The bicentered countries

Federal states, on the other hand, tend to have several centres of porn production. However, porn being a very competitive and concentration-prone activity, must of these countries only have 2 poles where porn is produced. These countries include Germany (Hamburg and Berlin), Russia (Moscow and St Petersburg), Canada (Montreal and Vancouver) and Spain (Barcelona and Madrid). 

c) The polycentered countries

Of all the porn-producing countries in the world, only the USA can be considered a proper polycentered one. The USA do indeed have a single centre that stands out : Los Angeles, but also a relatively high number of other cities who also present a indigenous porn production and a high porn star density. These include Miami, Las Vegas, San Diego, Chicago, Phoenix, Scottsdale and New York City. A number of other countries could be considered to polycentered, or acentred, in the sense that they display no real center, but rather a quite homogenous distribution of their porn producers and their pornstars. These include Italy (with 12% of the Italian pornstars, Torino is the main centre, but not to a point where it could be called a monocentred situation), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro counts for 19% of the Brazilian pornstars), Colombia (where pornstars tend to come more from smaller provincial cities than from the capital Bogota). Whether you consider that these countries therefore have several porn centres (polycentered) or that the have none (acentred), they stand out from the patterns generally observed.

Ass and Titties Ratio

So, there was an article describing the statistics about boobs per country, but nothing about booties ! So the idea came to present both asses and boobs in a common figure. So on the vertical line is indicated the average circumference of asses / 20 (in cm.) and on the horizontal line, the size of boobs (going from A-cup =1, B-cup =2 etc.). 

Once distributed on the sheet, it seems that in regards to those two statistical criteria, cultural or genetic subgroups appear. On the left, in orange, are clearly visible the Slavic countries from Eastern Europe, that all share the characteristics of relatively smaller boobs, without necessarily having smaller asses. In the centre top, in green, are the Latin American countries, with average boobs but the biggest butts in the world of porn (Cuba, Brazil and Mexico compose the top 3). The top right corner (in light yellow, meaning large boobs and quite large butts) displays Southern European countries. The blue area, is the Anglo-Germanic world, where butts are relatively smaller, but boobs among the biggest. The last area, the pink one, is Asia, where both boobs and booties are quite small, with the notable exception of Japanese pornstars' tits, ranked third worldwide.

The World of Porn

Not all countries produce porn. Porn stars tend all to come from a restricted list of countries: Western countries, East European countries, Japan and to a lesser extent, Latin America and East Asia. Are excluded from this world all the muslim countries, all of Sub-Saharan Africa and most of Asia. This all appears clearly on this cartogram. The size of the countries are indicative of the total number of pornstars within that country. It appears clearly from this map that the USA has more pornstars than France, Germany and Spain combined, for instance.

ANALysis

Getting fucked up the ass isn't something every woman in the world accepts, and surprisingly not even every porn star! Luckily this changes a lot from one country to another, so we should be able to find some countries where a bit of anal porn wont be frowned upon !

And the winner is... UKRAINE! With 62% of their pornstars having done anal scenes.

This figure here gives an idea of the recent evolutions of the international concurrence within the porn industry at the level of workforce (pornstars).This is the zone B of porn, as the zone A is composed by countries of the Big Five (the USA, Japan, Hungary, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic) that all have more that 500 professional pornstars today. It appears clearly that a country like Canada, that was actually close to being in the top 5 is currently loosing it's influence and leaving space for countries like Russia or France.

Porn migrations

High standard porn and the salary that comes with can't be found everywhere in the world. That's why many porn actresses decide to migrate to work in other countries. Basically, these migrations obeys to the law of capital and work. The workforces (the pornstars) come from less developped countries and migrate to countries where a certain capital for porn is already a reality. For instance, Eastern European actresses tend to migrate to France (Romanians and Russians), Germany (Czechs and Hungarians), or to Spain. Mexicans, Colombians, Canadians and Cubans tend to migrate to the USA, whereas Brazil has lately become a stage in many Latin American pornstars' career. Japan is very special, because the japanese porn industry is developping almost without any contact with the rest of the world. A few korean actresses have made their way in Japan and a few Japanese actresses have managed to become well known by playing in either European or American productions. But these are very rare. An important remark is that the USA is above this whole dialectic of capital/workforce as the country attracts pornstars even from countries that have the necessary capital (France: Katsuni, Jessi Volt..., Germany: Amy Reid, Briana Banks..., Spain: Rebecca Linares, Bridgette B, Canada: Sunny Leone, Shyla Stylez...).

Facials

A facial cumshot is generally what ends a US porn scene. But far from being adopted by all pornstars, facial cumshots is actually only performed by approximately 25% of all porn stars. This of course depends on the country. Generally, porn stars from North America (USA= 30%, CAN and MEX= 27%) have a strong tendency to perform facial cumshots. A surprising fact is that Japanese porn, that actually invented the principle of "bukkake" only present around 4% of porn stars willing to do facial cumshots. Notice that Western European countries, excluding Germany, generally tend not to reach high scores.  The winner country of this ranking is Australia, with almost 34% of it's pornstars performing the Grande Finale.

Segregation, Racism & Porn

On Freeones' rankings, the number of Black and Latina porn stars within the 2000 first compared to the 2000 last.

General ranking date on Freeones by ethnicity. It appears clearly that Latinas, Blondes and Brunettes are dominating the first places.

This figure shows the difference between what a random distribution of porn stars by ethnicity would have resulted in in the top 1000 and was the actual distribution looks like. Blacks for instance should be 110 in the US top 1000 (11.1% of all US pornstars) but in reality they're only 34.

11,1% of all American porn stars are African-american. Some of them come from the Southern States, such as Georgia (27% of Georgia-born porn stars are Black), or come from the socially deprivated bourroughs of cities like Chicago (15% Black porn stars in Illinois) or Los Angeles (13%). Even though a few Black porn stars such as Jada Fire, Obsession or Lacey Duvalle have made it to fame, most of these black porn stars never reached the highest levels of porn production. It appears clearly from the figures above, that are mainly based on rankings from Freeones and AVN Awards' results that Black actresses are not being given the same attention and media exposure as notably White or Latina porn stars and therefore never reach the same popularity. For instance, only once a Black actress has won an individual AVN Award: that was Midori in 2001 who won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her play in Westside. 

This could be explained widely by the fact that the main type of porn consumer the porn productions are targeting is a 40-year old white male. Some studies have showed that Republicans generally consume more porn than Democrats, so generally, the porn consumer tends to be White. But what this means is that White men only want to watch porn with white actresses and are nor interested in or attracted to black actresses. Nevertheless, this seems a bit simple for an explanation, as it appears clearly from the figures that Latin and Asian actresses do fine, Latin actresses are even the most overranked ethnic group in US porn. 

It therefore seems more likely that it's not aesthetical or ethnic reasons that lead porn consumer away from Black pornstars, but more the social prejudices that each consumer has on each ethnic group. Asian and Latin are both more recent ethnic groups and there has not been less of a history of discrimination and hatred  between the white majority and these minorities than between Whites and Blacks. It seems like the average American porn consumer is maintaining a certain segregation in his porn choices by continuing to prefer white actresses and generally not acclaiming Black actresses. The porn industry, mainly ruled by White, quite old and wealthy persons doesn't seem to want to change this situation. For example, out of currently 17 Vivid Girls, none is Black. And do you know any Black Penthouse Pets?

Just a few examples: here you see the "top rated girls" of three major porn sites. There is 0 Black pornstars in none of them. A few Latina actresses, like Esperanza Gomez made it to these sites, but the vast majority of all these featured porn stars are white. Notice that there's always a ginger actress.

The prejudices mentioned above all end up segregating Black actresses to gonzo porn. Ideas about Blacks like poverty, criminality, ghetto, gangs etc. are generally more adapted to gonzo porn that to scenarized, high standing porn. Some examples:

So this means that when a Black wants to do porn, she will have way much more chance of getting to do only gonzo, because gonzo filming seems, in the mind of white, male directors, more coherent with a whole prejudice-based context. Actually, Black porn stars can't become very famous pornstars because their skin colour is very quickly associated with low-budget gonzo porn and not with glamourous San Fernando porn and this keeps them away from the good freeones rankings and the AVN Awards.
